When Critical Role ended its first campaign after 115 episodes, the cast—voice actors who had played these characters for over two years—openly wept at the table. The final episode featured each character's epilogue, narrated by game master Matthew Mercer, but interspersed with out-of-character reflections. One of the most poignant moments came when Liam O'Brien, as the rogue Vax'ildan, accepted his character's death. The scene was scripted in outcome (Vax was fated to die) but improvised in dialogue. After the session, the players hugged, and Mercer said, "The story continues, just not in this way." Here, the final illusion was made explicit: the characters would live on in memory, but the active play was over. The magic circle dissolved not with a bang but with a shared acknowledgment of its constructed nature. Real Play -Final- -Illusion-
