The uprising lasted for six days and drew national attention to the issue of anti‑LGBTQ+ police harassment. Transgender women of color, including Marsha P. Johnson and Sylvia Rivera, were key leaders during these events. Their leadership in the face of discriminatory police raids helped galvanize a movement that would spread across the country.
