The fall of communism in the 1990s led to a collapse in state funding and a dramatic decline in production. Kinostudio was broken up and privatized, and the number of cinemas dwindled. However, from these ashes, a new, independent Albanian cinema has risen. This "New Albanian Cinema" is characterized by a willingness to confront difficult subjects such as the legacy of communism, corruption, human trafficking, gender identity, and the struggle for a new European identity.
