At its core, Rab Ne Bana Di Jodi is the story of Surinder Sahni, a simple, clean-hearted, and honest man leading a routine, humdrum life as an employee at Punjab Power. His world is turned upside down when he meets his late professor's daughter, Taani. In a twist of fate and out of a sense of duty, Suri marries the vivacious and fun-loving Taani (played by a debuting Anushka Sharma), who is mourning the death of her fiancé on her wedding day. She is his "total opposite," and their marriage, born out of tragedy, is devoid of the romance she once dreamed of.
