One of the first major scandals to put the city on the map was the "Kalyug in Kosamba" clip. In December 2005, two MMS sex clips of a college girl from Kosamba, about 30 km from Surat, caused a massive stir. The clips, which were 3.27 and 2.40 minutes long, showed the girl in intimate poses with a 21-year-old boy. The girl later lodged a police complaint of rape, stating she was forced into the acts and was unaware of the recording. Police discovered the MMS had been stored on the boy's phone and was possibly leaked by a mobile phone repairer. This early case set a troubling precedent for how mobile technology could be used to sexually exploit and publicly humiliate individuals.
