Younger, urban women writers are using the pseudonyms of "Kamakshi" or "Mohanika" to write what they call "Svatantryada Kamakathe" (Stories of Independent Desire). These stories subvert the traditional male-gaze. Instead of the hero chasing the village belle, the stories feature married women, divorced doctors, or college professors exploring their sexuality on their own terms.
