For Direct Recruits, the year of the UPSC exam batch establishes their base batch. Their relative seniority within that batch is determined strictly by their rank/merit list in the UPSC exam and their performance during probationary training at the National Academy of Indian Railways (NAIR) and the Indian Railways Institute of Logistics and Materials Management (IRILMM).
