Subodh Bhave (in his directorial debut) shows remarkable restraint. He doesn't over-dramatize. The tawaif (courtesan) sequence, the jugalbandi (musical duel), and the final riyaaz (practice) scene are shot with intimate, almost reverent close-ups. The lighting evokes old Pahari paintings.
