Joensen grew up in a dysfunctional home. Her father was a faroese sailor who was largely absent, while her mother was a devout Christian who was often physically abusive, sometimes violently so. The defining tragedy of her childhood occurred when she was just 12 years old. She was raped by a stranger in a railway station. Rather than receiving comfort, upon returning home to tell her mother what had happened, she was beaten and blamed for the incident. In a later interview, Joensen revealed that this horrific event shaped the rest of her life. Seeking a means to retaliate against her mother for the abuse, she vowed that when she grew up she would have sex with boars, noting that her mother was "so shocked, she thought I was allied to the Devil".
