Finally, on the evening of Sunday, August 21, 1831, the revolt began. Turner and a small group of seven enslaved men gathered in the woods, armed with axes, hatchets, and knives. They set out to kill every white person they encountered as they moved toward the county seat of Jerusalem (now Courtland). Their first target was Joseph Travis’s farm, where Turner himself was enslaved. They caught the white occupants completely by surprise, killing them in their sleep.
