VRChat made this change to prevent malicious clients from stealing accounts, ripping avatars, and crashing lobbies.
The client is free, which means anyone can join. There are public worlds with adult content, screaming children, and trolls. VRChat has a "Safe Mode" (hides all avatars and voices) and "Personal Space" (shields you from others). Parental supervision is strongly advised. vrchat client free
