📖 The Legend Behind the Hymn: The Fever of Koon Pandian

The story of Manthiramavathu Neeru is as miraculous as the hymn itself. During the 7th century CE, Madurai was ruled by King Koon Pandian (the hunchback king), who had converted to Jainism under the influence of Jain monks. While the queen, Mangayarkkarasiyar, and the prime minister, Kulachirai Nayanar, remained ardent devotees of Shiva, the king grew increasingly hostile toward Shaivism. A great debate was arranged between the Jains and the young saint Sambandar, who was only sixteen years old at the time. When the Jains attempted to burn the place where Sambandar stayed, the saint redirected the fire onto the king’s body, causing a severe, incurable burning fever. The king’s condition deteriorated, and no physician could relieve his suffering.

Sambandar challenged the Jains to cure half of the king’s body while he would cure the other half. As the Jains failed, Sambandar applied sacred ash (vibhuti) from the Madurai temple while singing the ten verses of the Thiruneetru Pathigam. Wherever the holy ash touched, the fever vanished and the king’s hunchback straightened. The half treated by the Jains remained uncured, leading to the king’s conversion back to Shaivism. This hymn, therefore, is chanted to this day as a remedy for fever, illness and spiritual afflictions.

🎵 The Hymn: Manthiramavathu Neeru Lyrics (Tamil & English)

Below you will find each verse of the Thevaram, first in the original Tamil script, then in a Romanized English transcription, followed by the English translation of the meaning. The hymn consists of ten stanzas, each ending with the refrain paying homage to the Lord of Thiru Aalavai (Madurai).
