The Qanoon-e-Shahadat Order replaced the British-era Evidence Act of 1872 during the Islamization process in Pakistan under President Zia-ul-Haq. While it retains much of the structural framework and logical flow of the original 1872 Act, the QSO was modified to bring the rules of evidence in conformity with the injunctions of Islam as laid down in the Holy Quran and Sunnah.
