Debut solo album released under the alias "Jay Dee." A collaborative effort with fellow Detroit native Phat Kat, this album blends gritty, sample-based beats with raw rhymes, capturing the sound of the Motor City in the early 2000s.
Dilla was roughly 75% finished with The Shining at the time of his death. Entrusted to his close friend and fellow Detroit producer Karriem Riggins, the album was completed according to Dilla’s blueprints and released later in 2006. Featuring vocal contributions from Common, Busta Rhymes, J Dilla's brother Illa J, and Dwele, the album captures a vibrant, polished, and triumphant sound that serves as a beautiful companion piece to the insular grief of Donuts .
